Lawmakers override resignation and demand immediate handover of government property

The Edo State House of Assembly has formally removed suspended Speaker Blessing Agbebaku from office, and elected a new Speaker to take over the leadership of the House.

Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku.

During plenary on Monday, 17 lawmakers signed an impeachment notice against Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency 1. The motion for his formal removal was moved by Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by Ahmed Waziri of Etsako Central.

According to the House, Agbebaku’s indefinite suspension was upgraded to full impeachment because he failed to submit and properly document his resignation after he was first suspended.

Yekini Idaiye was subsequently elected as the new Speaker.

Announcing the decision, Speaker Idaiye said the Assembly had concluded the process and directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession immediately.

“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye declared during plenary.

“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House.”

The House said it would not hesitate to involve law enforcement agencies should the former Speaker refuse to comply with the directive.
