A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has picked Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who chairs the PDP Presidential Primaries Collation Committee, made the declaration on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

Onor, a former Cross River State governorship contender, was the only aspirant in the Wike-backed bloc after picking up his expression of interest and nomination forms earlier this month, according to Naija News.

Ortom told party members that the committee settled on Onor following wide consultations and voice votes conducted across the 36 states and the FCT. He then presented Onor as the faction’s choice for the 2027 race.

Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, including National Commissioners Abdullahi Zuru and Prof. Rhoda Habor Gumus, were on ground to monitor the process at the PDP national secretariat.

After the announcement, party leaders issued Onor a certificate of return and the PDP flag as its presidential flagbearer.

In a parallel exercise, the Abia State chapter of the PDP also adopted Onor through consensus. Returning Officer Emmanuel Ukpong said Onor polled 25,197 votes across the state’s 17 LGAs. Abia PDP Chairman Abraham Amah praised security agencies for maintaining order during the primary.

Onor flew the PDP’s flag in the Cross River State governorship election in 2023.
