A part-time student of the University of Benin studying Political Science was reportedly shot and killed near the Ugbowo campus gate in Benin City, Edo State. The attack happened shortly after he finished his semester examinations.

According to accounts from the scene, the student was inside his vehicle when he was targeted. A video that has been circulating online shows the car with several bullet holes on the windscreen, which has heightened concern and sparked reactions across the university community.
Students and residents around the area say the incident has renewed fears about security along the Ugbowo axis, a route frequently used by students commuting to and from campus. The Ugbowo gate area has been flagged in the past for incidents of robbery and violent attacks, especially in the evenings.
As of now, the University of Benin management and Edo State Police Command have not released an official statement confirming the identity of the victim or the circumstances surrounding the killing. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been reported.
The incident has led to fresh calls from students for increased security presence around the campus gates and safer transportation options for those attending evening and part-time programs.
