The United Arab Emirates has officially withdrawn from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its OPEC+ alliance, ending nearly six decades of membership in the global oil cartel.

The decision took effect on May 1, 2026, following an announcement by Abu Dhabi on April 28. UAE officials said the move reflects the country’s long-term economic and energy strategy, allowing it to expand production capacity without OPEC-imposed quotas. Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei described it as a “sovereign decision” made in the national interest, emphasizing that the UAE remains committed to stable and responsible supply to global markets. 4d6a0edc

The UAE, OPEC’s fourth-largest producer, has been pushing to raise output toward 5 million barrels per day by 2027. Under OPEC’s quota system, its production had been capped at about 3.4 million barrels per day. ADNOC’s leadership said the exit gives the country greater flexibility to accelerate investment and meet rising demand while maintaining low-carbon production standards. 3fb8f0f1

The departure comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the Iran conflict, which has already disrupted regional supply. While analysts say the exit could weaken OPEC’s influence over global oil markets, UAE authorities have stressed that the decision is not directed against any member and that cooperation with other producers will continue. bcd182e3

The UAE has also withdrawn from OAPEC, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries, which does not set production quotas but promotes regional energy cooperation.
