SENATE MOVES TO AMEND CONSTITUTION FOR STATE POLICE.

The Senate has launched a constitutional amendment process to allow the creation of state police, citing rising insecurity across Nigeria. The legislative step was reported by Punch Newspapers on Wednesday, June 4, 2026.

Lawmakers said the push became urgent due to persistent attacks by bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal groups that have stretched the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force. Supporters of state police argue that local command structures would understand terrain and threats better, leading to faster response times.

The proposed amendment will need to address key issues that stalled similar efforts in the past: control structures, funding mechanisms, and safeguards against political abuse. Opponents have warned that governors could misuse state forces, while advocates say clear legal checks can prevent that.

Several states already operate regional security outfits like Amotekun, Ebube Agu, and local vigilante groups. The Senate says formalizing state police through constitutional backing would unify standards and improve coordination with federal security agencies.

Stakeholder consultations and public hearings are expected next as the Senate moves the bill forward. The outcome could reshape Nigeria’s security architecture if passed by both chambers and approved by state assemblies.
