OYO TEACHERS DEMAND URGENT ACTION AFTER SCHOOL ABDUCTIONS AND KILLING.

Teachers in Ogbomoso have taken to the streets to protest the abduction of colleagues and students and the killing of an educator during a coordinated attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

The protest on Monday brought classroom activities to a halt as teachers marched to the TESCOM office carrying placards with messages calling for the release of those in captivity and stronger security around schools.

The demonstration followed an attack last Friday where gunmen invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School. Several teachers and pupils were abducted, and Assistant Headmaster Joel Adesiyan was killed.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that 7 teachers were abducted and one was killed, identified as a Mathematics teacher. He said security agencies had arrested six suspects and were working to rescue the remaining victims.

Oyo State NUT Chairman Fatai Hassan described the slain teacher as dedicated and peace-loving, saying the union would miss his courage. Teachers at the protest warned that rural schools were becoming unsafe and demanded permanent security deployment and rapid response systems.

The state government has since suspended all school excursions, field trips, and sports competitions outside school premises as part of new safety measures.
