Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has passed away at 40, according to multiple reports from family sources and colleagues. He reportedly died on Monday, May 11, 2026, after battling kidney cancer for some time.

The actor had been out of the public eye for months, with his last social media post dating back to December 2024. His absence had sparked concern among fans, though colleague Ikechukwu Ogbonna had earlier said Ekubo was fine and simply taking a break from public life.

Ekubo was known for his roles in Nollywood romantic comedies and dramas, and gained prominence after finishing first runner-up at Mr Nigeria 2010 and starring in _Weekend Getaway_. In 2020, he was listed among the UN’s “Most Influential People of African Descent under 40” for his work in entertainment and social development.

Tributes have been pouring in from colleagues including Mofe Duncan and Bolanle Ninalowo, who expressed shock and grief over his passing. The Actors Guild of Nigeria is yet to release an official statement.
