NIGERIA’S GRID CAPACITY SHRINKS WITH GAS SUPPLY AT 43%.

Nigeria’s power grid is facing a significant challenge due to a severe gas supply shortage, with thermal plants receiving only 43% of their required gas supply. According to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the country’s average available generation has dropped to approximately 4,300MW, primarily due to inadequate gas supply to thermal generating stations, as reported by Punch Nigeria.

National Grid.

The required gas volume for optimal operation is 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) per day, but actual supply stands at only 692.00 MMSCF. This deficit has led to constrained generation output and reduced energy allocation to Distribution Companies (DisCos). NISO has implemented load shedding to maintain grid stability and prevent system disturbances, with energy dispatched in line with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) allocation percentages.
