The Nigerian military has dismissed suggestions of a ceasefire agreement with Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, insisting that its operations against insurgent groups will continue.

The position was made public on Thursday, November 5, by the military spokesperson, Major-General Samaila Uba, during an intelligence briefing in Abuja.

Uba said the armed forces had no intention of suspending their operations, pointing to what he described as progress recorded through the killing of insurgents, arrests of suspects and the rescue of abducted victims.

He maintained that security forces would sustain pressure on the armed groups despite the renewed attacks on military positions in parts of northeastern Nigeria.

The military’s clarification comes amid increasing insurgent activities in the region, where Boko Haram and ISWAP have continued to pose security challenges despite years of counterterrorism operations.

Uba also disclosed that Nigeria was engaging neighbouring Sahel countries that recently withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States on matters relating to security and diplomatic cooperation.

The discussions are expected to support broader regional efforts to address terrorism and other security threats affecting the West African region.
