The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, according to an official statement. The changes were necessitated by the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election and electoral activities.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

Key changes include the rescheduling of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections to Saturday, 16th January 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections to Saturday, 6th February 2027, as stated in the INEC press release. Party primaries will commence on 23rd April 2026 and end on 30th May 2026, with campaigns for Presidential and National Assembly elections starting on 19th August 2026, and Governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns beginning on 9th September 2026.

The Commission has urged political parties to adhere strictly to the timelines, emphasizing that it will enforce compliance with the law, as reported by INEC.
