Germany has announced plans to increase its visa application capacity in Nigeria as part of efforts to address delays and improve access to consular services.

The Consul General of Germany in Lagos, Daniel Krull, disclosed the development during a German National Day reception in Lagos.

He explained that the German Consulate was working to provide more appointment opportunities by increasing the number of visa counters and engaging external service providers.

According to him, additional counters are expected to be introduced before the end of 2026.

Krull also revealed that Germany intends to transfer more visa applications to a processing centre within the country for remote assessment, a move expected to improve the handling of applications.

Another planned measure is the establishment of a document verification centre, particularly for Nigerians seeking admission into German universities and research institutions.

The consul general said the changes were intended to make the application process more efficient and strengthen educational and research opportunities between both countries.

He also highlighted Germany’s development assistance to Nigeria, which he said was valued at more than €700 million through grants and loans.

The announcement could provide some relief to Nigerians who have experienced difficulties securing visa appointments, although the expansion plans do not amount to an automatic approval of applications.
