Côte d’Ivoire is facing a setback in its cocoa exports as Brazil has suspended imports from the country due to concerns over the origin of the beans. The move is aimed at ensuring that cocoa shipments meet Brazil’s phytosanitary requirements.

The suspension affects a significant market for Ivorian cocoa, with exports to Brazil valued at $177 million in 2024. This development may strain trade relations between the two countries, which had explored cooperation in areas like research and sustainable production.

Côte d’Ivoire’s cocoa sector is already under pressure from lower global prices and calls to reduce the guaranteed farmgate price. The country’s authorities must now provide assurances that shipments meet international standards to lift the suspension.
