Local hunters in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State have raised alarm after receiving reports that bandits plan to abduct schoolchildren in the area. The hunters are appealing for better weapons and logistics to confront the threat.

Festus Ogundairo, Chairman of the Hunters’ Association in Odeda LGA, disclosed this during an appearance on Ojukoro, a programme aired on Smash 88.1 FM, Abeokuta. He said residents are increasingly alarmed by rising insecurity.
Ogundairo noted that the warning comes roughly two weeks after a petrol station manager was kidnapped around 7 p.m. in Odeda, near a secondary school. The victim was later released after a ransom was paid.
He said information circulating on social media suggests bandits have sent letters threatening to target schools in the local government area. “It is true that these incidents are not happening only in Odeda, but the situation in Odeda is particularly worrisome,” Ogundairo said in Yoruba.
The hunters stressed that cooperation between local vigilantes and formal security agencies is vital for curbing kidnappings and banditry in rural areas. They added that hunters are often first responders in remote communities and need adequate arms to engage armed groups.
The Ogun State Government has said security agencies are increasing visible presence, patrols, intelligence-led operations, and community partnerships to tackle armed banditry. Residents have been advised to stay vigilant, report strange movements, and avoid spreading unverified information. Commercial farmers were also urged to use armed escorts when accessing farms.
Mass abductions of schoolchildren have become a major security challenge in Nigeria, with criminal gangs using surveillance, informants, and fear tactics to target schools. Groups typically strike during vulnerable hours, using gunfire and explosives to overwhelm unarmed guards.
As of now, no schools in Odeda have reported actual attacks, but the threat has heightened tension among parents and teachers.
