The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says it will picket and close three Lagos State-owned universities if the state government fails to act on the FGN-ASUU 2025 Agreement.

The institutions named are Lagos State University, LASU; Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH; and Lagos State University of Education, LASUED.

‘Enough is enough’ – ASUU Lagos Zone 

Speaking to journalists at LASUSTECH’s main campus in Ikorodu on Thursday, Lagos Zonal Chairman, Prof. Adesola Nassir, described the state’s delay as “unbecoming.”

He said ASUU had sent several letters to the government without results, and members will no longer accept the perceived neglect. The union is now moving to the next stage of action.

“We are giving this warning ahead so that there won’t be any allegation that some persons are the ones sponsoring ASUU members to demand their rights,” Nassir stated. He added that the non-implementation has left lecturers feeling “neglected, undervalued, and increasingly uncertain about the government’s commitment to their welfare.”

Nassir recalled that the union spent eight years renegotiating the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, which ended with the signing of the 2025 version. To build consensus, the Federal Government’s negotiating team included Pro-Chancellors from federal and state universities and other agency representatives.

“With that setup, we expected a smooth rollout so strikes over non-implementation would not disrupt academic calendars again,” he said. “To our utter disappointment, the Lagos State Government appears to be playing the ostrich on this matter. Six months of engagement with some state representatives has not yielded any concrete outcome.”
