The UK government is set to introduce a new National Police Service, nicknamed the “British FBI”, aiming to revamp policing and tackle complex crimes like terrorism, fraud, and organized crime. This new force will merge the National Crime Agency’s work with national roles such as counter-terrorism and road policing. The National Crime Commissioner’s role will be the top law enforcement position, replacing the head of London’s Metropolitan Police.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that the current policing model is outdated, stating, “We will create a new National Police Service – deploying world-class talent and state-of-the-art technology to track down and catch dangerous criminals”. This move is part of broader police reforms, considered the biggest shake-up since 1829, aiming to enable local forces to focus on everyday crimes like shoplifting and anti-social behavior.

The reforms are expected to reduce the number of police forces in Britain, currently 43 in England and Wales, to save money and reduce crime. The changes will be announced on Monday, with the goal of modernizing policing and improving efficiency.
