Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher, has been declared the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

He was adopted unopposed at the party’s primary on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Abuja, after receiving unanimous support from delegates and national leaders. Sowore received the AAC flag to loud applause at the event.

Kayode Babayemi, who chaired the AAC Presidential Primary Committee, said the consensus reflects the party’s belief in Sowore’s “steady leadership and long-term dedication to fighting for a fair and truly democratic Nigeria”.

After securing the ticket, Sowore relinquished his role as AAC National Chairman. He handed over to Samuel Ajeyigbe, Deputy National Chairman (Administration). The AAC, which Sowore founded in 2018, fielded him for president in 2019 and 2023. He scored 33,953 votes in 2019 and 14,608 in 2023.

Accepting the nomination, Sowore said the AAC was created to build a “new Nigeria” rooted in accountability, justice, and people-centred governance. He promised to push for “revolutionary change” to tackle corruption, unemployment, insecurity, and poor governance.

He also alleged that security has been “privatised,” with institutions serving the elite over ordinary Nigerians. Sowore pledged to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 with citizens’ backing.

Prior to the primary, Sowore had confirmed his presidential ambition on Channels Television’s Politics Today, saying Nigeria needs a clean break from the “same failed political class” and that delegates would have the final say.

The primary brought together AAC members and delegates from across Nigeria as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
