The Nigeria Police Force has issued a nationwide warning against the use of vehicles with concealed, altered, or unregistered number plates, stating that violators will face immediate impoundment and prosecution.

Police commands across Lagos, FCT, Rivers, and other states said the enforcement is part of efforts to improve public safety and reduce crime. Authorities noted that vehicles without proper identification are often linked to robbery, kidnapping, and “one-chance” incidents.

Lagos Commissioner of Police CP Jimoh Olohundare warned that it is now prohibited for motorists to cover plate numbers or use unregistered vehicles. “People are also prohibited from using unregistered vehicles,” he stated, adding that enforcement will respect citizens’ rights.

In Rivers, the command announced a clampdown starting March 16 targeting vehicles with covered or obscured plates and unauthorized flashing lights. Akwa Ibom Police said any vehicle found with dark covers, faded plates, or unauthorized numbers will be seized immediately.

The FCT Police also ordered that vehicles without plates be impounded across Abuja as part of operations against rising “one-chance” crimes.

Police spokespersons urged all vehicle owners to ensure proper registration and visible plates, warning that offenders risk fines, prosecution, and loss of their vehicles.
