Military forces under Operation Hadin Kai have secured the release of more than 47 civilians, predominantly women and minors, who were detained by ISWAP fighters in Kangarwa, Kukawa LGA, Borno State.

The extraction occurred on June 20, 2026, following weeks of intensified air strikes and ground assaults on insurgent hideouts near Lake Chad. Under mounting pressure, the terrorists reportedly vacated their camps abruptly, creating an opening for the captives to break free after months in confinement.

Officials said the rescued individuals are now receiving medical attention at a protected location. Relief organizations are working alongside the military to provide food, counselling and support needed for their reintegration.

The Theatre Command described the mission as evidence of its strategy to weaken extremist operations while prioritizing civilian safety. It pledged to maintain pressure on remaining ISWAP cells until peace returns to the region.
