A 32-year-old Nigerian national, Christian Eze Promise, died in police custody in West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area on Sunday. According to authorities, Promise was riding a scooter on the wrong side of the road when police attempted to stop him. He allegedly rammed his scooter into a police motorcycle, fell, and attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended.

Promise was taken to a Special Staff office for questioning, where he complained of uneasiness and was rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The incident has sparked an inquiry, with the National Human Rights Commission, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Nigerian High Commission notified.
A magisterial probe is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Promise’s death, and his body has been preserved at the AIIMS mortuary for further procedures.
