The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a large consignment of illicit drugs concealed inside imported furniture and women’s headgear.

The discovery was disclosed on Sunday by the Agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, who shared videos of the operation on X.

According to Babafemi, the seizure is one of the recent discoveries made by NDLEA operatives.

In one of the videos, officers are seen carefully opening large cardboard crates containing imported sofas. After cutting through the outer packaging, they cut into the foam and inner padding of the furniture, where several sealed packages of suspected narcotics had been hidden.

In a separate discovery captured in another video, officers examined decorative women’s headgear. Upon cutting open the fabric and linings of the head wraps, they found further packages of illicit substances carefully stitched and concealed inside.

A third clip showed rows of vacuum-sealed bags containing dried plant material, laid out on a table after they were recovered by the operatives.

Babafemi did not disclose in the post the specific quantity or type of drugs recovered, the location of the interception, or whether any suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure.

The latest discovery, however, fits a pattern NDLEA has repeatedly warned about, where drug trafficking networks hide narcotics inside everyday consumer goods and personal items to smuggle them into and out of Nigeria.

Over the years, the Agency has uncovered similar concealment methods involving furniture parts, headgear, shoes, electrical appliances and other ordinary imports and exports at seaports, airports and courier facilities.

The NDLEA, under its Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), has continued to urge members of the public, travellers and clearing agents to be cautious about packages, luggage and consignments whose full contents they do not know.
