Health authorities have dispelled concerns over a possible Ebola outbreak in Adamawa State after laboratory tests confirmed that two individuals initially suspected of carrying the virus were negative.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced that the two suspected cases in Yola returned negative results after two rounds of laboratory testing.

The agency’s Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, explaining that the investigation began after the Adamawa State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre received a report about the individuals in the early hours of October 30, 2026.

Both individuals had presented symptoms considered consistent with Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), prompting their isolation and the activation of appropriate public health precautions while investigations were underway.

Idris said the negative results mean Adamawa currently has no laboratory-confirmed Ebola infection. He also confirmed that the previously reported case in the Federal Capital Territory remains Nigeria’s only confirmed case.

He praised the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health and other health officials for their prompt response, adding that the national disease control agency would continue working with the state government to strengthen disease surveillance and emergency response measures.

The NCDC urged Nigerians not to panic or circulate unverified reports about the suspected infections. It advised the public to depend on official government announcements for accurate health information.

The agency also cautioned against ignoring possible symptoms of Ebola, including fever, severe weakness, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and unexplained bleeding, particularly among people who may have been exposed to the virus.

Anyone experiencing such symptoms after a possible exposure was advised to seek immediate medical attention, disclose relevant travel or contact history to healthcare workers and avoid self-medication.

The clarification follows Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the FCT on October 20, 2026, involving a woman who had travelled from Uganda.

The NCDC said it would continue monitoring the situation alongside the Adamawa State Government and other relevant agencies.
