The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has destroyed fake and unwholesome products worth ₦1.8 billion in Abuja.

The items were set ablaze at the Kuje Dumpsite after being seized during raids in Abuja and nearby states. The destroyed goods included counterfeit and expired medicines, unregistered cosmetics, contaminated food items, and unsafe drinks. 

Speaking at the exercise, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, who represented Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the operation is part of the agency’s drive to safeguard Nigerians from harmful products. She cautioned that fake drugs can lead to treatment failure, organ damage, and even death.

Among the drugs destroyed were smuggled antibiotics, anti-malarials, and painkillers that lacked regulatory approval. The agency also shut down several warehouses and shops linked to the products during its enforcement sweep.

NAFDAC restated its plan to strengthen market surveillance nationwide and advised Nigerians to purchase drugs and consumables only from approved outlets. The public was also encouraged to report suspicious or substandard products to the agency.
