The recent arrest of 281 street urchins in Lagos State has shed light on the underlying issues of poverty, inequality, and lack of social support that plague the country. While the authorities may see the arrest as a victory for public order, it is merely a temporary solution to a much deeper problem.

The root causes of youth neglect and crime, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunities, need to be addressed through a more holistic approach. This includes investing in education, job creation, and social welfare programs to provide dignity and opportunities for young people.

The government, civil society, private sector, and religious institutions must work together to address these issues. A national approach is needed to tackle youth neglect and crime, rather than just enforcing laws and punishing those who are struggling.

The arrest of street urchins should serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria to focus on building a responsive society that provides for its young people, rather than just enforcing laws.
