The Kogi State Government has launched a full investigation into the deaths of four members of the same family in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area, after they reportedly ate amala.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, announced this in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to Fanwo, Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the Commissioner for Health to immediately probe the incident, with focus on possible food poisoning or contamination.

The statement noted that the family’s dog also died after consuming the same food, a development the government said would be included in the probe.

“The Chief Servant is deeply saddened by this tragic loss. He has ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the facts,” Fanwo said.

He added that relevant samples and other evidence must be examined in line with standard public health protocols to determine if the food was contaminated or if any other medical or environmental factor was responsible.

Fanwo said the Ministry of Health will work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure a thorough investigation and that appropriate health measures are taken based on findings.

He urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculations until authorities conclude investigations and release verified facts.

Governor Ododo also commiserated with the bereaved family and the people of Ihima, praying for strength and comfort for them.

The government assured that it will update the public as soon as facts emerge from the investigation.
