Katsina State has recorded an additional case of Lassa fever, bringing the total to four, with three fatalities. The cases were reported in Funtua and Dan Musa local government areas. The state’s Primary Health Care Agency confirms the cases, with one patient, a female, currently receiving treatment and responding well.

The government has identified 44 contacts, isolated them for monitoring, and discharged 37 after completing the observation period. Officials assure measures are in place to curtail the disease’s spread. Medical experts urge the public to practice proper hygiene and avoid contact with rodents, the primary carriers of Lassa fever.

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic illness endemic to West Africa, transmitted through contaminated food, surfaces, or direct contact with infected rodents or bodily fluids. Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, and sore throat, which may progress to severe hemorrhage, respiratory distress, and shock.
