A Nigerian Army-led joint security team has rescued 16 persons abducted by suspected kidnappers in Kogi State.

The rescue followed a coordinated search and rescue operation involving the Army, Navy, Police, local vigilantes and hunters.

According to the Nigerian Army, the victims were kidnapped on Sunday, 9 August 2026 when gunmen attacked commuters along the Ojuwo–Ajengo–Memarebo and Ojiwo–Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area.

Acting on credible intelligence that the victims had been moved to Adumu Community in Dekina LGA, troops of 21 Battalion and personnel of NNS Lugard launched a joint operation with the Police, vigilantes and local hunters.

The team made contact with the fleeing kidnappers and engaged them in a fierce gun battle. Overpowered by superior firepower, the criminals abandoned the captives and fled into the forest with gunshot wounds.

All 16 victims were rescued unhurt. They comprise 6 adult males, 6 adult females and 4 children.

They are currently undergoing documentation, medical assessment and reunification with their families.

Regrettably, 1 local hunter was killed during the operation. 1 police officer was also injured and is receiving treatment.

The Army said the success reflects the effectiveness of joint operations and synergy between security agencies and local stakeholders in fighting kidnapping.

It also commended members of the public for providing timely information and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
