A 23-year-old Japanese military officer, Kodai Murata, was arrested for breaching the Chinese embassy in Tokyo, carrying an 18cm knife and threatening to kill Chinese diplomatic personnel. The incident has escalated tensions between China and Japan, with China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, stating that Japan has failed to protect the embassy and its personnel, violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Murata, a second lieutenant in the Ground Self-Defense Force, claimed he wanted to meet with the Chinese Ambassador to request he tone down his hard-line rhetoric. Japan has expressed regret over the incident, with Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stating that the government will take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The breach has intensified existing tensions between China and Japan, particularly over Taiwan and Japan’s military involvement in the region. China has demanded a thorough investigation and severe punishment for Murata, citing far-right ideologies and neo-militarism in Japan as underlying causes.
