The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Saturday released the personal details and academic credentials of candidates for the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

The publication, done in line with the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election and the Electoral Act, opens the statutory period for public scrutiny of candidates’ qualifications.

INEC made available the EC9 forms and accompanying documents submitted by presidential candidates and their running mates. The documents have been published in INEC offices nationwide.

Among those published are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, ADC; Peter Gregory Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC; and other contenders.

According to INEC, the documents contain each candidate’s personal particulars, educational qualifications, occupation, work history, sworn declarations and supporting certificates submitted during nomination.

The publication also marks the commencement of the period during which members of the public can inspect the documents and challenge any information supplied by a candidate in court if there is evidence that any declaration is false.

Citing Arise News, Section 33 of the Electoral Act provides that any person with reasonable grounds to believe that information in a candidate’s affidavit or documents submitted to INEC is false may institute legal action against such candidate.
