A gas station explosion occurred at Fonex Gas Station on Edibe Edibe Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, injuring several residents and destroying property. The incident happened around 9:40 am, with eyewitnesses describing the blast as powerful, shaking nearby buildings and initially mistaken for a bomb detonation.
The cause of the explosion is still unclear, with some attributing it to a phone call near the gas dispensing point, while others blame electrical faults or faulty equipment. Emergency responders were delayed, and residents initially struggled to contain the fire using improvised means. The police have deployed officers to the scene, and efforts are ongoing to mobilize fire service personnel.
The incident has sparked concerns over safety measures at gas stations in residential areas, with the Cross River State Government vowing to clamp down on such facilities.
