The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says it has contained the cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State.

In a statement on Saturday by its spokesperson, CSC Jane Osuji, the Service said the outbreak was confirmed on September 23, 2026, through laboratory tests conducted by its medical team in collaboration with Kano State public health authorities.

According to the NCoS, the outbreak was first detected on September 17 when an inmate developed vomiting and diarrhoea and was immediately admitted for treatment. Emergency medical protocols were activated the following day.

The Service confirmed that two inmates died as a result of the outbreak – one at the facility and another at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital. No further deaths have been recorded since the confirmation.

Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has directed sustained medical intervention and preventive measures in partnership with the Kano State Government, while a team of senior medical personnel from the national headquarters has been deployed to the facility.
