Proceedings in the House of Representatives were thrown off balance on Thursday, June 4, 2026, after Hon. Philip Agbese alleged his signature was forged on a paper backing Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere for minority leader.

Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo in Benue State, interrupted plenary with a point of personal privilege. He said he was stunned to see a document online carrying his name and signature in support of Ugochinyere’s push for leadership of the opposition caucus.
The lawmaker clarified that though he had met with Ugochinyere and other minority members to discuss welfare and constituency matters, he never signed any nomination form. “My legislative privilege has been violated. Using my signature without consent amounts to forgery,” Agbese told colleagues. He urged the House to probe the matter and stop what he described as moves to smear his name.
He also dismissed viral claims that some representatives collected $50,000 to support a particular candidate. “My people keep calling me. I have not taken money from anyone, and I won’t. My integrity is not for sale,” he insisted.
The exchange sparked shouting and disorder on the floor, forcing a brief pause in proceedings. The incident highlights the deepening struggle among opposition members over who controls the minority leadership seat.
