Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has resigned from office and advised the Federal Government to appoint a Coordinating Minister for Energy to unify reforms across the power and gas sectors.

In his April 22, 2026 letter to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu said he will leave office on April 30 to pursue the Oyo State governorship race, in line with the Amended Electoral Act 2026. He thanked the President for the opportunity to serve and noted his political ambition began in 2016 while at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Adelabu pointed to several gains under his watch, including the Electricity Act 2023, peak generation exceeding 6,000MW, grid upgrades, better revenue collection, and market income rising from N1 trillion in 2023 to N2.3 trillion in 2025 after tariff and debt reforms.
He flagged gas shortages, vandalism, and incomplete commercialization as ongoing problems. To sustain progress, he recommended cost-reflective tariffs with subsidies, recapitalizing DisCos, faster metering, more transmission investment, and stronger regulation.
He said a Coordinating Minister for Energy would align policy across power, gas, water, and environment to improve supply and speed up renewables. His aide, Bolaji Tunji, confirmed Adelabu will ensure a smooth handover.
