Police in Ogun State have arrested a suspect for allegedly creating and spreading a false security alert on social media. The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday, June 4, 2026.

According to preliminary findings, the suspect deliberately fabricated the narrative and circulated it online to attract attention and generate content. Authorities said the fake alert caused unnecessary panic among residents before security agencies intervened and clarified that there was no threat.

Security agencies have repeatedly warned against the spread of misinformation, noting that false security reports can trigger panic, disrupt businesses, and divert emergency responders from real incidents. The police said investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and whether others were involved.

The suspect is currently in custody as police work with digital forensics experts to trace the origin of the post and establish if it violated cybercrime and public safety laws. Officials said the case will serve as a warning to content creators who spread unverified information for engagement.

Residents have been urged to confirm security information through official police channels and verified government sources before sharing online. The police emphasized that creating or distributing fake news is a punishable offence under Nigerian law.
