Anambra State Government has given the go-ahead for the 2026 Imo Awka festival to hold, with a directive that masquerades must not carry dangerous weapons during the event.

The state said the restriction is meant to protect lives and curb violence often associated with cultural performances. Masquerades will still be allowed to take part in the celebrations, but carrying items like cutlasses, knives, or any object capable of causing harm is prohibited.

Imo Awka is a prominent cultural festival in Awka, the state capital, and attracts large numbers of residents and visitors each year. According to government officials, the measure seeks to balance the preservation of cultural tradition with the need to maintain peace and order during the festivities.

Security operatives have been instructed to enforce the directive and keep watch over activities throughout the festival period. Community leaders and event organizers have also been asked to educate participants about the ban.

Plans are in place for the 2026 festival to proceed under heightened security to guarantee a calm and safe celebration.
