The Inspector-General of Police has visited Oyo State to assess the situation following a deadly attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele, Oriire LGA, that claimed a teacher’s life and led to the abduction of several pupils.

During the May 16, 2026 visit, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu met with local police commanders and community leaders. He said security agencies had scaled up tactical and intelligence operations across the affected areas and surrounding forests to locate and rescue the kidnapped students.
Disu condemned the assault as “baric,” offered condolences to bereaved families, and promised that the force would not relent until all victims were freed and the perpetrators arrested. He was joined by Kwara CP Ojo Adekimi and CP Abayomi Shogunle of the Schools Protection Squad, and was briefed by Oyo CP Abimbola Olugbenga on ongoing operations.
Following the incident, the state government temporarily shut schools in Oriire, Oyo East, Surulere, and Olorunsogo. With additional security personnel now deployed, authorities have cleared the schools to reopen on Monday.
Police say manhunt operations are still underway and urged residents to share credible information that could aid the rescue effort.
