The US federal government has entered a partial shutdown after the Senate approved a last-minute funding deal. The shutdown took effect at midnight Eastern Time on Saturday, with most agencies receiving funding until September, except for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which got a two-week exemption.

The deal was struck between President Donald Trump and Democrats, following the fatal shooting of two US citizens in Minneapolis by federal agents. The House of Representatives, currently out of session, is expected to vote on the bill on Monday.

This shutdown is the second in the past year, coming just 11 weeks after the previous 43-day impasse, the longest in US history. However, this one is likely to be shorter and less widespread.

The White House has directed agencies, including Transportation, Education, and Defense, to execute shutdown plans. “Employees should report to work… to undertake orderly shutdown activities,” a memo said.

Democrats want new policies for immigration enforcement agents, including ending roving patrols and requiring body cameras. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, “We need to rein in ICE and end the violence”.
