The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union have jointly written to the Minister of Education over a proposed 30 percent salary increase for non-teaching staff, saying no final deal has been reached.

In a letter dated April 16, 2026, sent through the Joint Action Committee, both unions said a circular purporting to approve a 30 percent raise to the consolidated salary structure was not part of any concluded negotiation. They stressed that talks are still ongoing under the Federal Government’s Expanded Tertiary Institutions Negotiation Committee led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, and warned that the circular undermines collective bargaining.
The unions recalled an earlier ultimatum dated March 27, 2026, demanding conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement by April 30, 2026. They said failure to meet the deadline could lead to a breakdown of industrial peace across universities and inter-university centres from May 1.
The Federal Government had, in a March 30 letter signed by Education Minister Tunji Alausa, conveyed approval of a 30 percent increase to be implemented as a Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance for federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Regulatory agencies were directed to begin implementation based on attached guidelines.
SSANU and NASU maintain that discussions are still in progress after seven meetings since October 2024, and have vowed not to accept any outcome below the negotiated understanding.
