Switzerland is set to return 18 Nigerian artefacts, including Benin bronzes and monoliths, to Nigeria today. This move is part of ongoing efforts to repatriate cultural objects taken during the colonial era. The artefacts were looted during the 1897 British punitive expedition in Benin City.

The Nigerian government has been negotiating with Switzerland for the return of these artefacts, with talks beginning three years ago. The Swiss government has expressed willingness to deepen cultural diplomacy and formalize agreements with Nigeria.

This development follows similar repatriations by countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States. In 2022, Germany returned over 1,000 Benin works, while the Netherlands handed over 119 Benin Bronzes last year.

The returned artefacts will contribute to Nigeria’s cultural heritage and identity. The Nigerian government plans to house them in museums in Lagos and Benin City, with the Oba of Benin recognized as the custodian.
