Students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, on Tuesday barricaded the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to protest the death of a colleague allegedly killed by robbers.

Sources said gunmen stormed a hostel in the Eruku area overnight, killing one student and injuring others. The attack sparked outrage and led to a mass demonstration at the school in Ewekoro Local Government Area, along the Wasinmi–Itori axis.

The demonstration caused major traffic congestion on the busy expressway, with drivers and commuters stuck for several hours.

School authorities confirmed the victim was a final-year student. They also announced the suspension of exams fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday.

In a notice signed by Engr. Gideon O. Adekunle, Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, the institution called the development “sad.”

The notice stated: “Due to an unfortunate incident that occurred overnight, which led to the death of a student and left another in critical condition after a robbery at Eruku, all exams scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29, have been postponed.

“This decision will allow affected students time to recover emotionally and to mourn our colleague.

“Academic activities will resume on Friday, July 31, 2026, according to the timetable. A revised schedule for the postponed papers will be released later.”

DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, Ogun State Police Spokesperson, confirmed to _Daily Trust_ that officers had been sent to the scene to maintain order.

He, however, said he was yet to confirm if the protest was directly linked to the robbery killing.

“What I can confirm for now is that there is a protest. On the other matter, give me time to verify,” he said.

Daily Trust notes that campuses across Ogun have continued to battle insecurity. Students have suffered attacks, killings, and theft in recent years.

In May, a student of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, was killed during a robbery in Remo North.

At a security meeting on student safety, the polytechnic’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Adedayo Musari, disclosed figures: “From 2009 to 2026, Ipara recorded 15 robberies with 2 student deaths. Isara had 32 robberies and 5 deaths. Ode recorded 58 robberies with 16 students killed.”

In April, about 12 armed men also raided the College of Engineering, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun campus. Several students were injured and macheted. Phones, a car, and other valuables were carted away.
