African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the detention and arraignment of two people accused of cyberbullying the agency.

Sowore, in a statement on X on Thursday, said he witnessed the court proceedings involving one of the defendants, Maryam Isa Shehu, a final-year student of Bayero University Kano.

The AAC candidate alleged that both defendants spent nearly 30 days in EFCC detention before being brought before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court.

“The EFCC under Ola Olukoyede is inherently evil,” Sowore said.

He said despite the arraignment, the court ordered that both defendants be remanded in prison custody pending the next hearing.

According to Sowore, Shehu was sent to Suleja Prison while the other defendant was remanded at Kuje Prison. Both are expected to remain in custody until August 31.

He expressed concern over Shehu’s situation, noting that she is due to begin her final-year examinations on Saturday.

“What makes Maryam’s situation even more disturbing is that she is a final-year university student who is due to begin her final examinations this Saturday. None of that appeared to matter,” he said.

Sowore said the remand means the defendants will miss critical academic and personal obligations while awaiting trial.
