The Nigerian Army has recorded fresh gains in the South East, with sustained operations forcing members of a militant group to surrender weapons, while separate raids led to the recovery of more arms and an IED.

The breakthrough was achieved by troops of 82 Division/Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, OPUK. According to the Army, the results reflect the impact of its combined kinetic and non-kinetic approach to dismantling criminal networks in the region.

The development followed sustained operations by 34 Artillery Brigade and the recent arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a soldier. Unable to withstand the pressure, members of a militant group operating in Egbema and surrounding areas began voluntarily handing over weapons.

One of the suspects reportedly led troops to a hideout where the group had buried its arms. Items recovered from the site include one AK-47 rifle, two AK-47 magazines, 54 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, and four locally-made guns.

In another operation, troops of Sector 5 OPUK, acting on credible intelligence, recovered two General Purpose Machine Guns, 45 rounds of 7.62mm x 51 ammunition, and one Improvised Explosive Device. The Army said the recovery further limits the ability of criminal elements to threaten public safety.

The Army described the voluntary surrender as proof that sustained pressure, strategic engagement, and collaboration with other security agencies are forcing criminals to abandon violence.

“We remain resolute in sustaining the current operational momentum until all criminal networks are dismantled and lasting peace is restored across the South East,” the statement said.

The Nigerian Army also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through intelligence-driven operations, and urged the public to continue providing timely information to security agencies.
