There is tension in Akwa Ibom State after security operatives halted a mega rally planned by supporters of Peter Obi.

The 2-million-man solidarity march, put together by the Obidient Movement under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), was scheduled to hold in Uyo on Independence Day for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, led by Commissioner Baba Azare, announced a total ban on all political rallies and street processions slated for October 1st.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, the decision was taken based on security reports that some persons might hijack political gatherings to cause chaos. The Command also cited limited manpower to manage large crowds on Independence Day and ordered that all earlier approvals be postponed.

But the Obidient Movement is not happy.

Speaking at a press conference in Uyo on Thursday, the State Director of the movement, Dr. Benjamin Smith, faulted the police action and described it as unfair and belated.

Smith disclosed that the movement had earlier received clearance from the police and even met with the Command on September 29th alongside the rally planning committee. He said over N20 million had already been spent to mobilize supporters from all 31 local government areas.

He lamented the financial loss and warned that such cancellations should not repeat itself. He also alleged political interference, accusing the ruling APC of influencing the decision.

While urging members to remain calm and law-abiding, he assured that a new date for the march will be announced soon.
