The Osun State Government is seeking legal redress following reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has frozen some of its accounts, 10 days to the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

The development comes amid heightened political activity in the state as parties make final preparations for the poll.

While details of the specific accounts and the reason for the action have not been made public by the EFCC, the timing has drawn reactions from stakeholders who are questioning its impact on governance and election administration.

The state government has maintained that all due process must be followed and that any action affecting state funds should be subject to judicial review. Sources indicate that officials are consulting legal counsel to challenge the reported freeze.

This is not the first time Osun’s finances have been subject to legal scrutiny. The state has been involved in a prolonged legal battle over the release of local government allocations. In recent months, an Oyo State High Court granted interim orders restraining banks from releasing funds belonging to the 30 local government councils in Osun, pending the determination of a suit filed by the state government.

Separately, the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council, Diaspora Committee, had earlier called on the EFCC to freeze accounts allegedly linked to a ₦13.7 billion “ghost workers” salary scheme. The committee alleged that a 2023 audit found irregular salary payments and warned that the funds could be diverted for political activities ahead of the election.

The EFCC is yet to issue an official statement on the latest reports. The Osun State Government has also not released details of the legal action it intends to take.

With the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026, political tension in Osun remains high.
