Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has named veteran politician Musiliu Obanikoro as head of his governorship campaign organization for 2027. The move was unveiled on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, at a broad meeting of Hamzat’s campaign structure in Lagos.

Obanikoro, who previously served as Nigeria’s envoy to Ghana and held two junior ministerial posts, will now lead strategy and coordination for Hamzat’s bid. Campaign insiders said the appointment received a nod from President Bola Tinubu before Hamzat announced it publicly to members.
The former Lagos Central senator was chosen, sources explained, because of his track record across elective and appointive roles. Obanikoro was once chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, later Commissioner for Home Affairs under Tinubu’s administration, then moved to the Senate before his diplomatic and ministerial assignments. Council members reportedly had no objections, calling him an experienced operator with wide political reach.
The development follows GAC’s earlier endorsement of Hamzat as APC’s consensus flagbearer for Lagos State, backed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Tinubu. Hamzat, who has been deputy governor since 2019, filed his nomination forms recently and has framed his campaign around sustained development and stronger service delivery.
