The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, staged a mass protest in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, over the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire LGA.

Demonstrators converged at the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, secretariat in the American Quarter area of Ibadan. From there, union leaders addressed members and reiterated demands for urgent government action to secure the release of victims.
The protest is part of nationwide solidarity rallies directed by NUT’s national leadership following the May 15, 2026 attack on three schools — Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery & Primary School, and L.A. Primary School. Gunmen kidnapped 39 students and seven teachers, while two teachers were killed during the incident.
Oyo State public primary and secondary schools remain shut indefinitely since Monday, June 1, 2026, in line with NUT’s directive. Only SS3 students writing WAEC were permitted to enter school premises.
Protesters carried placards demanding safer schools and the unconditional release of captives. NUT National President Audu Titus Amba said the union will continue lawful action until all abducted teachers and learners reunite with their families. President Bola Tinubu has approved 1,000 forest guards for Oyo and deployed a specialized rescue unit to support rescue operations.
