The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sorrow and deepest sympathy to the Government and people of Colombia following a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026.

The tremor, described as the strongest recorded in Colombia this century, caused significant loss of life, left many injured, and destroyed homes, hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure.

Affected regions include Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and surrounding areas.

In its statement, the Federal Government said:

“The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria express profound sorrow and deepest sympathy to the Government and people of the Republic of Colombia.”

Nigeria extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished a speedy and full recovery to the injured*.

“Nigeria stand in full solidarity with the people of Colombia during this period of national mourning and recovery.”

The government also expressed confidence in Colombia’s resilience:

“Nigeria has full confidence in the resilience, unity, and determination of the Colombian people and the leadership of President Abelardo de la Espriella as they undertake search-and-rescue operations and begin the process of rebuilding.”

The statement concluded: “May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
