Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation, his wife Asabe Bashir, and son Abdulaziz, were remanded in correctional centres by an Abuja Federal High Court over alleged money laundering. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned them on a 16-count charge, with the court ruling that fresh bail applications must be filed, and the hearing is scheduled for March 6, 2026.

The EFCC alleges that Malami and his family laundered approximately N8.7 billion, with specific counts including procuring Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited to conceal N1,014,848,500 in a Sterling Bank Plc account. The defendants pleaded not guilty, and their counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, applied for bail, citing the previous grant by Justice Emeka Nwite.
The case has attracted public attention, given Malami’s former role as Nigeria’s chief law officer. The EFCC is committed to holding influential figures accountable, and this trial is being closely watched as a potential indicator of Nigeria’s judicial independence and anti-corruption resolve.
