Pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom.

The victims, 39 pupils and 7 teachers, were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, during attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and two other schools in Esinle.

Security sources said sustained operations by a joint team of DSS and military personnel forced the abductors to release the captives. The Defence Minister had earlier said the kidnappers threatened to kill the children if troops advanced.

The Oyo State Government and security agencies are yet to release full details of the rescue. Residents have celebrated the development, calling for stronger security in schools.
