One of the men accused of killing College of Nursing student Wendy Achumba in Imo State has been arrested by community youths and handed over to police.

The suspect, Onyema Okonkwo, was tracked down in Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo LGA, following an investigation led by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa. In a video that has since gone viral, Okonkwo confessed to attacking Achumba with an accomplice identified as Emmanuel.
He said the assault happened around 7 p.m. at Achumba’s off-campus residence. She was living alone at the time because her two housemates were away on nursing experience. According to his account, they forced their way in after she rejected them. He admitted to raping her twice while Emmanuel did once, then said he struck her with a stick before Emmanuel allegedly returned and killed her with a knife.
Achumba was from Ngwa, Abia State. She had finished her midwifery training and was doing post-basic studies at the College of Nursing, Umulogho. Her body was discovered in her apartment with multiple injuries.
The Imo State Police Command, through spokesperson Henry Okoye, confirmed the case. Officers conducted an on-site assessment, evacuated the body to a morgue, and opened an investigation. Okoye said one suspect is in custody for questioning as the search for other accomplices continues.
Community members say Okonkwo has been transferred to the police. The Command has appealed for calm and pledged to ensure all those involved face justice.
