A severe winter storm is woking havoc across the United States, claiming at least 10 lives and leaving nearly a million people without power. The storm has prompted emergency declarations in at least 20 states and Washington, DC, with widespread power outages, flight cancellations, and hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service warns that the storm’s Arctic air mass will drive temperatures to dangerously low levels, prolonging disruptions to daily life. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported five weather-related deaths over the weekend, while Texas authorities confirmed three deaths, including a 16-year-old girl killed in a sledding accident. Louisiana reported two hypothermia-related deaths.

As of Sunday night, over 840,000 customers were without electricity, mostly in the South, with Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia hit hardest. The storm is expected to bring record-breaking cold temperatures, with wind chills plunging to -45°C (-50°F) in some areas, posing life-threatening risks.
